Why Your Azolla is Not Growing? 7 Common Problems & Easy Solutions

7 min read April 2026 FarmRoots Team

Starting an Azolla farm is exciting, but it’s not always smooth sailing. Many farmers feel frustrated when their once-green pond turns red, or the growth suddenly halts. Don't worry—most Azolla problems are just symptoms of environmental stress. Here are the 7 most common issues and how to fix them professionally.

1. Azolla Turning Red / Brown

This is the most common complaint. Azolla contains a pigment called anthocyanin that turns red under stress, similar to how human skin tans in the sun.

The Fix: Check for Phosphorus deficiency. Add 50-100g of Single Super Phosphate (SSP) per 10 sq. meters. Also, ensure the bed isn't getting too much direct afternoon sun; use a 50% green shade net.

2. Azolla Turning Yellow or Pale Green

Yellowing usually indicates a lack of nutrients, specifically nitrogen or iron, or exposure to extreme heat.

The Fix: Refresh your bed. Replace 20% of the water and add 5-8 kg of fresh cow dung slurry. Cow dung is the primary source of nitrogen for Azolla.

3. Roots Turning Black and Decaying

Healthy Azolla should have clean, brownish-white roots. If they turn black and mushy, your water quality has degraded.

The Fix: This is usually caused by water stagnation or excess organic matter. Drain half the water, remove the sludge from the bottom, and refill with fresh, clean water.

4. Slow Growth or Stunted Size

Azolla should double its biomass every 3-5 days. If it's growing slowly, the "fuel" in your pond is low.

The Fix: Apply a mineral mix. Every 15 days, add a mixture of 30g of micronutrients and ensure the pH of the water is between 6.5 and 7.5.

5. Pest Infestations (Caterpillars & Snails)

Little green worms or snails can wipe out an entire bed in days. They thrive in humid conditions.

The Fix: Avoid chemical pesticides as Azolla is animal feed. Use a diluted Neem Oil spray (5ml per liter of water) or manually remove the pests during daily harvest.

6. Overcrowding and Matting

If you don't harvest Azolla daily, it starts growing "layers" on top of each other. This creates heat inside the mat and leads to rot.

The Fix: Harvest 500g to 1kg per square meter every single day. Keep the surface area clear enough so the plants can move slightly when you touch the water.

7. Water Becoming Foamy or Smelly

This happens when the microbial balance in the bed is lost, often due to over-feeding with cow dung slurry.

The Fix: Stop adding dung for 3 days. Siphon off the top foam and let the bed rest. Use a stick to stir the bottom soil gently to release trapped gases.

Troubleshooting Summary Table

Symptom Likely Cause Immediate Action
Red Color Sun stress / Low Phosphorus Add SSP + Use Shade Net
Yellow Color Nitrogen deficiency Add Fresh Cow Dung Slurry
Black Roots Water toxicity / Lack of O2 Partial Water Change
Small Leaves Lack of Micronutrients Apply Mineral Mix

Conclusion

Managing an Azolla bed is an art of balance. Most issues can be prevented by simply replacing a bit of water every week and ensuring the nutrient levels are topped up. Remember, healthy Azolla is the foundation of a profitable organic farm!
